COMMON NAME:  Black-Crested Gibbon

 

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION:  Southeast Asia

 

HABITAT:  Tropical Rainforests

 

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • dark brown or black dense hair

  • hairless face

  • hands and feet are very much like humans

 

DIET:  Omnivore
  • fruit

  • leaves

  • spiders

  • insects

 

LOCOMOTION TYPE:  Brachiation

The species is extremely acrobatic in trees.

 

SOCIAL GROUP ORGANIZATION:  

Social group consists of small groups, monogamous adult male and female and their offspring.  

 

PARENTAL CARE:  Mother is primary caregiver

 

COMMUNICATION:
  •   territorial hooting calls

  •   menacing gestures

 

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:  

Almost no predators can catch them.

 

ENDANGERMENT STATUS:  Critically Endangered

The biggest threat to this species is habitat destruction and hunting for food. Trapping these gibbons for the pet trade is also a problem.
