GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION:  Africa

 

HABITAT:  
  • semi-arid woodlands

  • savanna woodlands

  • gallery forests

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
  • size of a squirrel

  • large round eyes

  • brown/grey in color

 
DIET:  Insectivore
  • insects

  • fruit

  • tree exudates (gum)

 

LOCOMOTION TYPE:  Arboreal Quadruped
  • leaping between trees

  • kangaroo-like hops

  • climbing

 
SOCIAL GROUP ORGANIZATION:  
  • solitary foragers

  • meet at night in groups

  • sleep during the day in groups of around 6

PARENTAL CARE:  Mother is primary caregiver
  • the first three days or so, the mother keeps the infants in constant contact with her

  • the young are suckled for six weeks and can feed themselves at two months

  • they grow rapidly, causing the mother to walk slowly and awkwardly as she transports them

 

COMMUNICATION:

Calls are a big part of Galago life and they make up to 18 distinct calls, which can be classified in three categories:

  • defensive and aggressive

  • social contact

  • annunciatory

 

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES:  
  • They mark their territory by urinating on their hands while they climb and swing across trees and make their own paths.
